Whether you are a beginner or an actively performing musician, our experienced guitar teachers offer you one-on-one instruction customized to help you achieve your musical goals. Our instructors teach both acoustic and electric guitar in a wide variety of classic and contemporary styles.
We also offer group guitar classes that teach sound fundamentals of playing, as well as more advanced study of theory and sight-reading. Our complete current class schedule with session dates and times is published quarterly and available upon request in hardcopy and e-versions.
A number of our instructors also lead bands (or ensembles) in a variety of styles. These bands also provide opportunities for guitar players with some experience to learn how to play better with other musicians and pick up new repertoire. Visit our Bands page for more details.

GUITAR INSTRUCTORS
Dale Dahlquist - Acoustic & Electric Guitar, Electric Bass, Bands, Classes Dale Dahlquist has had a long career of music performance and teaching with a "side" of music recording and sound reinforcement. His first professional stint was in the mid 70's touring with June Apple recording artist Dakota Dave Hull, playing bass as a sideman in concerts at upper-Midwest colleges and universities. Since then, public venues have included folk festivals, county fairs, art festivals, TV and radio shows, the Minnesota State Fair and numerous bars and music clubs. His teaching experience at WBSM spans three decades and thousands of students. Dale teaches and has played professionally in a number of genres: bluegrass, jazz, rock, pop and dance band music. Blues, swing and ragtime guitar are specialties.
Peter Lang- Fingerstyle Guitar, Slide Guitar, 6 & 12 String www.peterlang.org/ Peter Lang is one of the world's preeminent 6 and 12 string
finger-picking guitar players. Along with John Fahey, Leo Kottke, and other
Takoma-label guitarists, Peter is considered to be a founder of modern
American finger-style guitar. He was one of a handful of artists
to bring the guitar to the stage and redefine it as a serious concert
instrument. Lang toured and recorded as one of
the top acoustic players of his day. In the 70s he was in good company,
having recorded or performed with the likes of John Fahey, Jerry Garcia, Chet Atkins, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Emmylou Harris, Leo Kottke, Freddie King and a host of others. The Takoma album he recorded with Leo Kottke and John Fahey is considered a classic. Steeped
in early folk, blues, and country, Peter has kept those traditions
alive through the old songs, and also his widely acclaimed original
compositions. His most recent recording, Testament, was described in Guitar Player magazine as "The DNA of the American Musical Experience."
Siama Matuzungidi - Acoustic & Electric Guitar, Bands, Classes www.siama-music.com Siama has taught and performed many styles of African and Caribbean guitar, including soukous, mbetani, calypso and highlife. His life-long performing experience has taken him throughout Africa, Japan and the United States. Siama's music is a mixture of traditional music from his home in Mbetani and Soukous, and he composes and sings in Lingala, Kingo, Swahili, French and English. He has performed with Ibeba System, Shangoya, Cyril Paul, Kavin Furhman, and his own current band Marimba Africa. Siama welcomes all levels of interested students.
Chris Moody - Acoustic & Electric Guitar, Bands www.chrismoodymusic.com Born in England, Chris began playing guitar at age 11. Although it was the electric guitar that initially inspired him to play music, he soon became interested in the Classical guitar. Lessons at the Spanish Guitar Center, London followed and Chris subsequently gained a degree in Music Performance at Kingston University, Kingston Upon Thames. Since this time he has been active as a performer on both classical and electric guitar, playing in and around London. As a teacher, he has extensive experience of teaching all ages and various styles which include: Contemporary Rock Guitar, Fusion, South American and Classical Guitar. Before his recent move to the Twin Cities, Chris was the Regional Guitar Coordinator for Surrey County Arts East in England.
Karen Mueller - Acoustic Guitar, Mandolin, Autoharp, Mountain Dulcimer www.karenmueller.com Karen is a national-touring performer with over 20 years of teaching experience. An international autoharp champion, she has released 3 critically-acclaimed CDs and authored two books, published by Mel Bay publications. Karen is a teaching artist with Young Audiences of Minnesota, and performs in the band of Katie McMahon, the original lead singer from "Riverdance". She enjoys teaching many styles, including folk, bluegrass, Celtic, and more.
Jim Ouska - Acoustic & Electric Guitar, Electric Bass, Bands www.jimandjanemusic.com Jim Ouska has been teaching individual lessons in guitar and bass and leading ensembles at West Bank School of Music since 1987. He won a WBSM jazz composers grant and has received nominations from the Minnesota Music Academy for guitarist of the year in the jazz, R&B and bluegrass categories. Also a singer and songwriter, he recently released three CDs of original songs. Jim performs regularly in the Twin Cities and throughout the Midwest and has been a featured guitarist on a number of recordings. Paul Renz - Director of Jazz Studies, Guitar, Bass, Ensembles www.paulrenz.com Paul Renz started the jazz ensemble program at WBSM in 1993 and currently leads three adult jazz ensembles that perform regularly in the community. He also teaches guitar and bass, jazz theory, composition, sight-singing and improvisation classes. Renz has a Bachelor's degree in jazz composition and arranging from Berklee College of Music and a Master's degree in composition and jazz studies from the New England Conservatory of Music. He has been featured as a guitarist and composer on National Public Radio. Renz's works have been commissioned by Tidewater Performing Arts of Virginia, Tidewater Classic Guitar Society, Minnesota Center for Arts Education, MacPhail Center for Music and Roseville Area High School in Minnesota. Renz has recorded and produced several critically acclaimed CDs featuring original compositions and some of the finest players in the upper Midwest. He performs frequently in the Twin Cities and his quartet tours nationally every other year. Renz is a well-known clinician and presents master classes throughout the United States.
Paul Storms - Acoustic & Electric Guitar, Bands, Classes Long time WBSM teacher Paul Storms studied music at the University of St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota under the tutelage of Jeffrey Van, Charles Pedersen, and Paul Berget. He has also studied with Michael Hauser and Pedro Bacan. He was chosen to perform at Master Classes conducted by Christopher Parkening, Larry Coryell and Sharon Isben. With a versatile repertoire that covers rock, blues, jazz, classical, flamenco and more, Paul teaches students of all ages, but is particularly adept at working with younger pupils. As a performer, he has played concerts from retirement communities to TV studios, from private events to the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board summer concert series with highlights including performances on WCCO and KTCA TV and radio stations KFAI, WCCO and KDWB. Recently he performed with the all star youth choir at the American Choir Director's Association Convention.

Beginning Guitar - Paul Storms While geared towards the beginner, this fun class often proves to be beneficial for students who have some experience. Learn the basics, scales, chords, accompaniment styles and play simple solos. Use of the pick and fingerpicking styles is also covered.
Introduction to Guitar - Dale Dahlquist For beginners who are looking for a supportive learning environment. This class will teach students basic guitar chords in several common keys, a few simple tunes, proper technique, simple flatpicking and fingerpicking patterns, and basic theory.
Introduction to African Guitar - Siama Matuzungidi This class will explore rhythmic patterns and guitar riffs common to Soukous and High Life styles of music. Soukous is an up tempo music also called African Rumba, similar to Soca and Calypso from the Caribbean. High Life is a West African music style. Teacher demonstrations, listening to recordings, some history and discussions of popular African musicians in this style are elements of the class. Familiarity with basic chords and notes will be helpful to students.
Music Theory for the Guitar Level I and II - Dale Dahlquist A unique opportunity for the serious beginner or accomplished musician to understand the structure of chords (major, minor, suspended, 6ths, 7ths), as well as how to index and play each in several forms. Learn the relationships of chords in a progression and how they resolve to and from each other through analysis of popular songs. Invaluable in songwriting, improvising, pulling tunes from recordings and playing with others. Level I Prerequisite: Introduction to Guitar, equivalent private instruction, or a ravishing curiosity Level II Prerequisite: Guitar Theory I, equivalent private instruction, or permission from instructor
Sight Reading for Guitar - Paul Renz Let's improve the sight reading reputation of guitar players! This course is a sight-reading clinic for any number of guitarists. Participants will be required to purchase some sight-reading materials. Additional music, including ensemble charts, will be provided by the instructor. This is an excellent opportunity to develop a skill that will serve you well, whether you wish to be a studio guitarist (commercial recording), compose your own music or be a better ensemble player.
The Zen of American Primitive Guitar - Peter Lang
Long time friend and collaborator of the legendary John Fahey, Peter Lang will
give a multifaceted class including insights on right and left hand technique.
Students will learn methods for muting and clarifying lead lines, and be
introduced to a variety of right hand picking styles. The class will
explore ways in which open tunings can give added dimension and coloring to
arrangements. Composition issues, the use of dynamics and practical
applications for slide and other open tuning techniques will be
investigated. The slide component of the class will look into lap vs.
classical, glass vs. metal and the ways in which various tunings flavor the
sound the slide produces. Tablature will be provided for lessons in both D
(DADF#AD) and C (CGCGCE) tunings, among others.
